Local history collection, [ca. 1850-1965]

Records represent the history of the Northwest Bronx neighborhoods of Kingsbridge, Riverdale, and Spuyten Duyvil. Also, some records documenting South Yonkers and the northern Manhattan neighborhoods of Inwood and Washington Heights. Included are maps, photographs, clippings, certificates, scrapbooks, publications on local historical topics, historical essays, books, and artifacts; newspapers include the RIVERDALE PRESS, 1950s-1960s, and the RIVERDALE NEWS. Of note are a certificate appointing Thomas J. Kiernan to the Golden Jubilee of the City of New York, 1948; auction catalogs advertising land in Kingsbridge (the Perot Estate and the Dickinson Estate), and North Marble Hill, 1890-1893; a certificate from the Hudson Monument Association to the North Side Board of Trade for a contribution to the fund for the erection of the monument, n.d.; visitors' book, P.S. 122, 1902-1939; a volume containing will, maps, titles, and other legal documents relating to real estate in Spuyten Duyvil owned by Isaac G. Johnson, 1907; deed to the Isham Estate, Inwood, ca.1850-1900; and minutes, 1949-1965, scrapbooks, and invitations (1950s-1960s) of the Kingsbridge Historical Society.

James P. Johnson was born in Yankton, South Dakota, on June 2, 1930. He grew up in Muleshoe and Lubbock, Texas. He left Texas to attend Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, graduating in 1952. That same year he went into the Marine Corps.
